The Democratic Unionist Party today announced its intention to take legal action against Northern Ireland First Minister Mr David Trimble and his deputy Mr Seámus Mallon over a scheme to give free public transport to the elderly.

The DUP's two ministers in the Northern Assembly, Mr Gregory Campbell and Mr Maurice Morrow, are taking the step in a bid to highlight the DUP's continued opposition to the Executive Committee.

Mr Trimble and Mr Mallon announced the commencement of free fares for senior citizens on all public transport last month.

However, the DUP argue that it was their former Regional Development Minister Mr Peter Robinson and his successor, Mr Campbell, who were behind the project.

Mr Robinson said today that the legal action will highlight how Mr Trimble and Mr Mallon had misrepresented the views of the Department for Regional Development.

"It will show how the withholding of crucial papers from the DRD potentially prejudiced crucial negotiations," he said.

He added "It will also highlight the inaccuracies and untruths of the Deputy First Minister over the DRD's free fares issue."

"If successful it will result in a declaration that the First Minister has again acted unlawfully and will force the distribution of all documents relevant to the two DUP-led departments."
