Dutch police are hunting a teenager who went to his school and shot a teacher in the head before fleeing.

A helicopter flew the critically wounded teacher to a hospital in The Hague while police sealed off the area around Stevincollege.

Students said the 17-year-old gunman was of Turkish descent and that the school, in the south-west side of The Hague, has "daily visits from the police."

The school was cleared and the neighbourhood closed to the public as police investigators moved in.

The student had apparently been called in after being punished for misbehaviour, according to reports.

School shootings are almost unheard of in The Netherlands, where tight gun laws strictly limit the availability of firearms. In 1999, a teenage student opened fire on other students in the southern Dutch town of Veghel, wounding five people. He was jailed for five years.
