Dutch soccer star Edgar Davids faces an investigation after his girlfriend alleged he assaulted her at least half a dozen times over the past two-and-a-half years, Amsterdam prosecutors said today.

Amsterdam's District Public Prosecutor's Office said it would investigate allegations made by the woman in a statement to the city's police earlier this week that the Juventus midfielder had attacked her on up to eight occasions.

The woman, named as Sarah H., alleged she was assaulted and threatened by the 28-year-old Dutch international between mid-1999 and earlier this month in both the Netherlands and Italy.

"We have to hear from both of them and from any other people involved or witnesses," a spokesman for the prosecutor's office said. Prosecutors, who have the power to initiate a criminal court case, did not release the woman's surname.

Neither Davids's club Juventus nor the Amsterdam-based lawyer representing the player were available for immediate comment.

Davids has returned to action this season with Juventus after serving a ban for testing positive for the banned steroid nandrolone.

Davids tested positive after a Serie A game against Udinese on March 4th.

The Dutchman was suspended for five months on August 28th but later had the ban reduced to four months and was cleared to play again on September 17th.
