Simon Dyson quickly dropped out of a share of the overnight lead as the forecast strong winds had an immediate effect at the Irish Open today.
Dyson was one of just 16 players to break par on the opening day at Adare Manor, a four under par 68 leaving him alongside Swedish pair Peter Hanson and Peter Gustafsson and Argentina's Andres Romero at the top of the leaderboard.
The 29-year-old from York was the first of that quartet back in action this morning and, starting from the 10th, dropped his first shots of the tournament on the 11th and 13th.
Tees had been moved forward yesterday by a total of 246 yards in anticipation of the wind, reducing the course from a record 7,453 yards to 7,207.
The penal rough, likened by many players to that seen at a US Open, was still going to cause problems but Simon Wakefield and Sandy Lyle were so far defying the conditions to move up the leaderboard.
Wakefield bogeyed the 10th, his opening hole, but birdied the 12th and 16th to improve to three under, while veteran Lyle - the 1988 US Masters champion - was a shot behind after picking up shots at the first and fourth.
