Dili - East Timorese vowed yesterday to sign up for August's independence ballot after the UN decided to begin voter registration, but urged more efforts to make the territory safe for a free vote.
The UN mission in East Timor was to begin signing up voters from 7 a.m. local time on Friday, about 10 days before the UN Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, decides if it is safe to go ahead with the vote on August 21st or 22nd. Analysts expect the vote to see the territory split from Indonesia.
