A thirty-one-year-old woman believed to have been a hospital worker on her way to work, died early yesterday following a collision between her car and a truck on the Dublin to Waterford road in south Co Kilkenny.

Gardaí said the woman from eastern Europe died at the scene in the townland of Barretstown, near the village of Knocktopher, on the N9, at 6.45am.

Gardaí declined to name the woman as efforts were being made to contact her family. The male truck driver was taken to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny but is not believed to have suffered serious injuries.

The accident caused significant disruption to traffic, as a section of the N9 was closed for technical examination. The road was reopened by mid-afternoon.
