WATERFORD RTC last week added another university scalp to its belt in the second quarter final of Challenging Times, the Irish Times/ RTE quiz competition for third level colleges.

The Waterford team of Sean Cahill, Damien Wilkinson and Ruth Lynch beat the University of Limerick team, represented by Michael Quilligan, Ciaran Madden, Raymond Lannon and Paul Hannon, by 190 points to 140. Waterford now joins UCG in the semi finals.

Waterford, as this column never tires of pointing out, beat TCD in the first round to qualify for the quarter finals.

Following plaintive submissions from representatives of the TCD team, who pointed out that UCD were nearly as bad as TCD and that the TCD team was very sorry, Campus Times is no longer going to make any "smart cracks about how rotten the TCD performance was. The time for recriminations is past, bygones are now bygones and we are all sufficiently mature to know when enough is enough.

The TCD performance was bloody awful, though.

Next week King's Inns (good barristers, generally not good Challenging Times competitors) face Cork RTC (good Challenging Times, competitors, an unknown quantity in barristerial terms) in the third semi final.

Challenging Times is transmitted each Wednesday at 8.30 p.m. on RTE 1. As ever, the question master is fashion's reluctant victim, Kevin Myers.
