Concurrent degrees

Graduates of concurrent teaching degrees generally tend to fare better in the marketplace than H Dip graduates

Graduates of concurrent teaching degrees generally tend to fare better in the marketplace than H Dip graduates. For instance, in UL, in 1997, some 126 students completed degree programmes in teacher education in the following specialist areas: general and rural science, metal and engineering technology, physical education, and wood and building technology. All graduates were employed or in further study when surveyed. Of these, 14 per cent were in permanent teaching positions while 66 per cent were in part-time teaching positions. One of the characteristics of these courses in UL has been the high proportion of graduates remaining in Ireland. The survey of 1997 graduates shows that 84 per cent found employment in Ireland.

Concurrent teaching degrees are not the preserve of UL and there are courses in subjects such as music education in TCD, and art and design education in NCAD. St Angela's College, Sligo, offers a B Ed in home economics and biology and a B Ed in home economics and catechetics while St Catherine's in Sion Hill, Dublin, offers a B Ed in home economics.
