Glenageary national school in Co Wicklow is the venue for a series if summer classes in music-making art for children aged 5 to 9 years.
The classes are open to beginners as well as to children already involved in music and the courses run in the mornings during the first and second weeks of July. The cost is £50 per child and this includes the use of instruments, art materials and a light snack. The course director is Anne Thielemans, who says that the idea is to use games, movement and playing instruments to introduce children to the essential elements in music such as beat and rhythm. Music from around the world will also be explored through art using a variety of techniques such as painting, clay and collage. Anne Thielmans' classes are based on the Carl Orff approach to music education which is nothing like as well known here as the Kodaly method, but is equally successful in involving young children in music-making.
