A scholarship scheme at Tralee IT has just been launched to encourage students to do more science subjects. The college's Millennium Science Scholarships for Leaving Cert students will be awarded to the student registering on the appropriate course in the college with the highest CAO points. The three courses which come under this new scheme are applied biology, applied chemistry and photonics. The scholarship, which is valued at £1,000, is being piloted this year. According to Dr Noel Mulligan, head of the Chemical and Life Sciences Department at the college: "It is vital that we promote science in second-level schools at every opportunity . . . Science is a living subject that touches our everyday lives, while Tralee IT science graduates take up employment with world market leaders based in Ireland every year."
