Schools' German Debating Competition Final
It's a Dublin-Kerry final at 6pm on Thursday, May 12th, in the all-Ireland secondary schools' German debating competition, sponsored by Siemens and the Goethe Institute, which is hosting the debate at 37 Merrion Square, Dublin. Debating the motion That Consumerism is the New Religion will be Muckross Park College, Dublin, and Presentation Convent, Tralee, Co Kerry, who came through a field of 48 participating schools. Now in its ninth year, the competition is organised by the German Teachers' Association.
UL Seminar on Intellectual Property
The Technology Transfer Initiative (TTI) is hosting a half-day seminar on intellectual property in the University of Limerick on Thursday, May 19th. The seminar will give an overview of how best to exploit the intellectual property emanating from universities. There is no charge for the seminar although registration is required in advance. Burren Wildlife Symposium
The 30th Burren Wildlife Symposium is a weekend symposium in the Burren, Co Clare, with expert lecturers and guides, covering topics from pine martens, badgers and archaeology to Burren flora and birdlife. The symposium, which takes place at O'Donoghue's Hall, Fanore, Co Clare, from May 20th to 22nd and features a trip to the Cliffs of Moher. The cost is €€45. Calculated Drama from TCD Physics Department
As part of the Hamilton Year of Celebrations, the TCD Physics Department is hosting a production of Carl Djerassi's play Calculus on May 17th, 19th and 20th at 7.30pm in the Schrödinger Lecture Theatre, TCD. Set in 1712, Calculus tells the story of how Sir Isaac Newton set out to defend his claim to have invented the calculus against that of Gottfried Leibniz. A chemist and an emeritus professor of Stanford University, Djerassi invented the Pill in 1951. He will attend the play on the May 19th, before which he will present the annual TCD Schrödinger lecture: Sex and Reproduction: Ready for Divorce? Admission to the lecture is free and all are welcome.
Open Days at RACE for Aspiring Jockeys
The Racing Academy and Centre of Education (RACE) in Kildare is holding an open afternoon today at 2pm. Students, parents and guidance counsellors can view the facilities, meet staff and find out more about the 10-month residential trainee jockey course. Candidates must be between 15 and 18 years of age and weigh less than 9 stone (57kg).The closing date for applications is June 24th.
