National Parents' Council Primary (NPCP) Talk

The National Parents' Council Primary's north Co Dublin branch is hosting a talk for the parents of primary schoolchildren at 8pm tomorrow in the Carnegie Court Hotel, North Street, Swords, Co Dublin.

The talk will be given by Margaret O'Donnell, senior advisor with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA), who will speak on the aims, objectives and outcomes expected from the new curriculum now being fully implemented in Primary Schools.

National College of Art and Design (NCAD) Open Day

NCAD's Open Day takes place on Thursday, December 1st on the campus at 100 Thomas Street, Dublin 8. No prior booking is required. Prospective applicants can visit the college between 9.30am and 2.30pm and should allow at least 2 hours for a visit. Talks and tours will take place throughout the day and a seminar for art teachers and guidance counsellors will be held at lunchtime.

Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) Letterfrack Open Day

The GMIT Letterfrack open day is a must for any student planning on applying for any of the programmes on offer. GMIT offers three entry-level programmes at the Letterfrack campus. The programmes on offer are the BSc in furniture design and manufacture, BSc in furniture production and technology and BSc in design and technology education (new programme).

Letterfrack also offers two add-on BSc degrees in product design and manufacturing technology.

There will be two repeat sessions. Session one begins at 10am and session two begins at 2pm. Detailed information on all programmes and entry requirements will be available. Guided tours of the workshops and lab facilities are scheduled. Students will also get an opportunity to view work produced by existing students and graduates.

Conference on the use of Drama in the Education of People with Asperger Syndrome

Aspire, the organisation that represents the families and carers of people with Asperger Syndrome, is holding a major European conference at University College Dublin on Saturday, November 26th. The conference is aimed at parents and teachers. Dr Carmel O'Sullivan, a lecturer in the education department at Trinity College Dublin, will present her work on the use of drama in education as an active teaching and learning strategy for young people affected by Asperger Syndrome. Also speaking will be Prof Chris Gillberg, one of the leading international experts on Asperger Syndrome.

UCD Clinton Institute for American Studies

Prof Slavoj Zizek will give a public lecture entitled The Ignorance of Chicken, or, The Limits of the Freedom of Thought at 7pm in the UCD Quinn School, Belfield on Tuesday, November 29th. International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day (ILD) is a celebration for all involved in adult literacy, which takes place on Saturday, November 26th in the Gresham Metropole Hotel, Cork between 10.30am and 4pm.

The focus this year is on students and in particular on the personal development and confidence-building required in adult literacy.
