For some people, speaking in public is easy. For others it's a terrifying experience complete with butterflies in the stomach and a dry mouth. There are formal courses for those who want to conquer their fear of speaking in public, but another way of gaining confidence in a more social setting is with Toastmasters, an organisation which offers its members the opportunity to develop and polish their speaking skills in a supportive and friendly environment. Toastmasters was formed in California in 1924 and it now operates worldwide.
A typical Toastmasters club has 20 to 30 people who meet once a week and there are clubs all over Ireland. For information about the organisation (including a list of clubs and contacts) check out www.toastmasters.org or telephone Linda Molloy: (01) 286 0718.
