Non Consultant Hospital Doctors online is the website of Dr Sean Nadaraja, an anaesthetic registrar based in Co Meath. "The site is non profit-orientated and provides me with a world podium from which I can pontificate my ideas relevant to both medicine and life," he says.
Set up in July 2000, the site is designed to embrace various philosophies of life. It is aimed at a very broad range of people - from Irish healthcare workers, to politicians to the general public - and it broaches subjects from anaesthesia to politics, music and theatre.
Labour-of-love sites (and this one is very definitely in that category) are often worthy but not very professionally executed. This one is so well presented that if Dr Nadaraja ever gives up medicine he has a healthy future ahead of him in web design.
But looking good is of little use if a site does not have the content to make the design worthwhile. This one has both. A lot of it is dedicated to getting better working conditions for non-consultant hospital doctors. A flavour of what is on offer here is the section that talks about how doctors have a higher rate of divorce/marital breakup, depression/neurosis and suicide compared to other sections of the population.
Dr Nadaraja is not willing to accept this as merely "part of the job" and writes: "Where others will demand proper safety standards in work environments so that their employees will be safeguarded against mishaps, our gracious employers see no such need and, as a consequence, put not only their employees at risk but also our patients!"
It is not all totally serious here. On college life the doctor writes: "Realising why the caged bird sings, I indulged in the social attributes of college life maintaining a precarious balance between social and academic existence."
The site's motto (and this is the first time I've ever seen a website motto) is mens sana in corpore sano which is Latin for "Healthy mind in a healthy body". Good motto, good site. Well worth seeing.
