`Visual art is central to a broad education," said Michael Corley, president of the ASTI, at the opening of the Muse 99 art exhibition in the National Museum in Colins Barracks, Dublin, last week. "Creativity, skill and sheer energy is evident in all the work on display here." He praised teachers and students for "keeping art alive."
The exhibition, which was opened by Mary O'Rourke, Minister for Public Enterprise, will run until the end of July. It features over 90 pieces by second-level students from all over Ireland. "The imagination and creativity" of the work was praised by the Minister, who also paid tribute to the ASTI and the Museum, organisers of the competition. Opening-night compliments were flying in the reception area, which was thronged with parents, teachers and students.
This is the first time the ASTI has worked with the National Museum to organise such an exhibition. The next MUSE project is planned for the year 2001.
