Cairo - Police officers accused of negligence in connection with last week's massacre of 58 foreign tourists in Luxor are to go on trial, President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt said in remarks published yesterday.
"Policemen who failed in their duty have been referred to prosecutors for questioning ahead of their trial and will receive the appropriate punishment," the government evening daily, Al Messa, quoted Mr Mubarak as saying.
"What happened (in Luxor) was the result of security lapses on the part of some officials and we are now trying to remedy this as well as continuing to tighten the noose on terrorism," Mr Mubarak said. Police sources said investigators were questioning six police officers accused of "negligence and failing in their duties".
