GARDAÍ in Mayo have released all eight people who were arrested at the Corrib gas landfall in Glengad over the weekend.
The seven men and one woman have been charged and are due to appear before Belmullet District Court on June 10th, the Garda press office has said.
The incident took place on Sunday evening, when gardaí say that “in excess of 100 protesters descended on the site and attempted to gain entry through security fencing, using improvised equipment”.
“Gardaí on duty in the area, backed up by the public order unit, confronted the protestors and eight people were arrested for public order and trespass offences,” the Garda press office said.
Spokeswoman Caoimhe Kerins said that the incident took place during the Rossport solidarity camp’s annual summer gathering. One of the men arrested was a father with a heart condition who was trying to assist his son when he became involved in an altercation, she said.
She said the protesters “were met by strong opposition from over 60 gardaí, including many from the public order unit”.
Meanwhile, when competitors arrived at Mulranny Golf Club in Co Mayo at the weekend they found that the message “No Shell” had been dug into three greens on the course. Local gardaí have appealed for information.
