Eight people were killed in weekend road accidents in the Republic and the North.
A man died and four others were injured, one critically, in a two-car collision near Limerick last night. The accident happened at Daly's cross on the Limerick to Nenagh Road. A motorcycle pillion-seat passenger killed on Saturday was named yesterday as Ms Sinead O'Connor (21), of Merlin Lawn, Bishopstown, Cork.
Ms O'Connor and her boyfriend were travelling towards Kinsale when the motorcycle apparently went out of control at Ballygarvan. She was taken to Cork University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the motorcycle remained in a serious condition in the hospital last night. A pedestrian in her early 60s was fatally injured by a van at Carrowcashel, Co Sligo, at 9.15 p.m. on Saturday.
One person was killed and three others were injured in a crash on the Glenshane Pass in Co Derry yesterday.
In Co Fermanagh, Mr Robert Denis Grimsley (21) from Lisnarick, was struck shortly before midnight on Saturday while walking on the Killadeas road in the village.
In Co Derry, Ms Jill Elizabeth Bradley (22), from Coleraine, was killed after her car was involved in an accident with a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
The accident occurred near Castlerock, shortly before 1 a.m. on Saturday. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital with head injuries.
Two pedestrians died in separate incidents after being struck by taxis early on Saturday.
In Co Tyrone, Mr Herbert King (60), from Sion Mills, died after being struck on the main road between Strabane and Sion Mills just before 2.35 a.m.
A 23-year-old man died after he was hit by a taxi on the Warrenpoint dual carriageway, near Newry in Co Down, at about 3.40 a.m.
