Eight people were killed in accidents over the bank holiday weekend. A seven-year-old girl, Melissa Green of Mill Road, Dungloe, Co Donegal, was killed when a tractor wheel fell on her while she was playing in a garden shed. The accident occurred on Good Friday evening.

A second fatal accident in Co Donegal occurred on Sunday night when a man in his late 20s was killed in a car crash near Killgordon. The crash in which Mr Paul Friel of Killgordan died involved two cars on the main Ballybofey-Castlefin Road. Two other people who were in the other car involved were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

In Sligo, a boy was killed on Good Friday evening. Nigel Conboy of Cartrondoffy, Ballintogher, died when he fell off a tractor being driven by his father and was crushed by a back wheel. He was due to celebrate his eighth birthday on Saturday.

An electrician was killed in Co Cork last Saturday when he fell from a crane. Mr John Murphy (34), of Ballincollig, Co Cork, fell 30 feet from the Irish Ispat crane onto a concrete platform in Cobh.

Mr Murphy received emergency treatment before being taken to Cork University Hospital, where he died of his injuries. The company has launched a safety inquiry.

A Co Fermanagh man (36) was killed when the car in which he was travelling went off the road. The man, Mr Wesley Walker, was from Kilreagh in Tamhlact. The early morning accident occurred on the A4 Dublin road near Kilreagh. Three other men travelling in the car were taken to hospital and one is said to be in a serious condition.

A man died after a road accident involving two vehicles at Halltown, Co Meath, on Sunday afternoon. Mr Con Farrell (66), from Hayestown, Ardmullan, Navan, who was driving one of the vehicles, died late on Sunday night in hospital.

Tadhg Reidy (21) of Glendahin, Ballyheigue, Co Kerry, was killed early yesterday in an accident involving a car at Gortain, Ballyheigue. He was a passenger in the car. Three other people in the vehicle, a man and two women, were taken to hospital, where their condition was described as "comfortable".

A 74-year-old woman was killed in a house fire yesterday morning at Knocknarea Avenue, Drimnagh, Dublin.
