A 72-year-old retired priest appeared before Judge John O'Donnell at Glenties District Court yesterday on 111 charges of indecent assault and buggery. They related to a period between 1966 and 1981.
Det Garda John Dooley gave evidence of how he arrested the man yesterday at 8.35 a.m. and brought him to Glenties Garda Station, where he was charged with the offences. He added that the accused replied "nothing to say" to each of the charges. Supt Kevin Lennon applied to the judge to set bail at £5,000, with an independent surety of £30,000. Judge O'Donnell approved of the bail but attached three conditions to it. He ordered the priest to surrender his passport to the gardai in Glenties; not to directly or indirectly contact any of the alleged injured parties or any witnesses and that he report to Glenties Garda Station on a weekly basis.
He remanded the accused to appear again next Friday, July 2nd, at Ballyshannon District Court.
