Whether or not you read a line of this guide to writers and the places associated with them, you will at least wallow in the illustrations, cartoons and graphics. The author is distinguished as one-time editor of Bord Fβilte's journal Ireland of the Welcomes. The book is beautifully presented, perfectly blending literature and landscape, concise, yet critical in terms of biographical detail, and displays astonishing scholarship. Evelyn Waugh sojourned in Glenmalure, we see a poignant picture of Liam O'Flaherty on his last visit to the Aran Islands, William Allingham's The Winding Banks of Erne is brought to life, the Tβin dissected, and Francis Ledwidge and Mary Lavin are described by Lord Dunsany as "two great writers" who wrote to him "from the same bank of the same river, the left bank of the Boyne". Obscure writers, such as Emily Lawless and Amanda McKittrick Ros are also remembered.
