Houses were cut off yesterday due to the 1km landslide.

There are fears that the peat may enter the River Smealeagh, an important spawning ground for salmon and sea trout, and cause an ecological disaster.

Some 25,000 people in the north east of the county have been ordered to boil water for human consumption after the main water supply for the area was affected.

Roads were blocked and residents left stranded after the landslide swept away acres of bog after several days of heavy rain caused a bog in the Stack mountains near Listowel to slide.

Up to 20 homes in a rural area between Tralee and Castleisland were cut off. The incident follows persistent periods of torrential rain that have hit areas across Ireland for the last two weeks.
