Irish consumers could collectively save €72 million each year through greater energy efficiency, according to Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI).
Mr Tom Halpin, head of consumer awareness in SEI, said that as part of Energy Awareness Week 2002, the SEI will try to emphasise how important it will be for individuals to change their purchase and usage patterns in relation to energy.
Mr Halpin urged all energy consumers to think about how they use energy during Energy Awareness Week.
"Energy is vital to nearly all aspects of our daily lives - we use energy for electricity, heat and transport, but we rarely stop to think about how or why we use it," he said.
He added that if consumers were to be more efficient with their energy use, by lagging water tanks, turning off all electrical equipment when not in use, setting thermostats and installing compact fluorescent lighting, then, Ireland's harmful greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced by as much as 600,000 tonnes.
Energy Awareness Week 2002 started September 22nd and runs until September 28th.
