The High Court yesterday appointed an independent engineer to oversee Galway Corporation's compliance with a court order and planning requirements on a landfill site near Lough Corrib.

The engineer, Mr Coleman Horgan, of DBFL Consulting Engineers, is to report to Mr Justice Kelly on the corporation's compliance and other matters on June 15th.

Last week, Mr Justice Kelly held the corporation guilty of "extremely serious contempt" and criticised its "appalling history of compliance" with its obligations under the Planning Acts.

He fined it £50,000 and directed it to pay the legal costs of local residents at the "highest possible scale". He also said he would appoint an independent engineer to report to the court.
