Ashley Giles guided England confidently past the follow-on target this morning with a flurry of early boundaries at Edgbaston as they battled to save the first Test against South Africa.
England were expecting a tense and nervous morning after Andrew Flintoff fell to the penultimate ball of the previous evening, leaving them to resume on 374 for seven and needing a further 21 to avoid the follow-on.
But instead Giles went on the offensive. It took only 10 balls for England to reach the figure after Giles, who resumed overnight on an unbeaten nine, hit five boundaries in just eight deliveries to lift the lowly Edgbaston crowd.
After England's encouraging early progress, however, their frustration at being unable to score for several overs finally got the better of Darren Gough, who attempted to pull a short delivery from Ntini and looped the ball high in the air to Jacques Rudolph at mid-wicket.
Two balls later Steve Harmison followed him back to the dressing room when his off-stump bail was knocked off by Ntini as the ball went through to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher and the end of the innings looked imminent as last man James Anderson walked out to bat.
It took a perfect yorker from Shaun Pollock to ends Giles's and England innings, leaving the home side on a total of 408 all out.
