A legal battle had been fought over the body of Mr Dayne Childs, which has lain in a mortuary in Norwich since last July.

His English adoptive mother, Ms Annette Childs, and his girlfriend, Ms Kirsten Milton, mother of his two-year-old daughter, wanted him cremated in Norwich after his death at the age of 26.

But his natural mother, Ms Cheryl Buchanan, who is an Aboriginal activist, began legal action to have his body returned to Australia, arguing that his spirit could rest only if he was buried in his homeland.

Judge Brenda Hales ruled that Mr Childs's adoptive mother and his girlfriend should have the last word over where he is laid to rest.
