Mansion House talks:Two of Ireland's leading environmental and economic commentators will talk about Ireland's sustainable future on Tuesday at 6.30pm in Mansion House on Dawson Street in Dublin. Prof Frank Convery, chair of Comhar, the Sustainable Development Council and director of the Earth Systems Institute at UCD, will be joined by ESRI economist John Fitzgerald in this free public event. Ecology and intelligence: Ecological Intelligence: The Coming Age of Radical Transparency(Penguin) is a new book by the American psychologist Daniel Goleman (left). Goleman – author of the best-selling Emotional Intelligence – argues that we are currently limited in our ability to make choices that are good for the planet but that a new life-cycle analysis of products' environmental impact is on the way. One company that is already trying to improve our ecological intelligence is goodguide.com, which tracks product records on health, social and environmental scales.

Brush up on biodiversity:The National Biodiversity Data Centre, in Waterford, is hosting a series of public workshops to raise awareness of different species in the International Year of Biodiversity. They include an introduction to ladybirds, on July 3rd, and an introduction to mayflies and stoneflies, on July 10th.

Both workshops will be at the centre, which overlooks the River Suir at Carriganore WIT West Campus. On July 17th you can take part in a survey of invasive species in Connemara National Park. The fee is €20, including lunch. See biodiversityireland.ie for more details.
