A roundup of this week's other heritage & habitat news in brief
New book looks at what the bust means for climate change
A new book analyses the financial crisis in the context of climate change, scarcity of fossil fuels and food scarcity. Fleeing Vesuvius: Overcoming the Risks of Economic and Environmental Collaspe, published by the Foundation for Sustainable Economics (Feasta), suggests changes needed in financial systems, land use and human interactions. It has a preface by the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Eamon Ryan, and an introduction by the Feasta economist Richard Doutwaite. Costs €20 from independent bookshops and online. See feasta.ie.
Waste not, want not: campaign to stop Irish people throwing out food
Chefs Rachel Allen (pictured), Kevin Thornton and Donal Skehan launched the Stop Food Waste movement earlier this week. The chefs prepared reduced-waste meals and provided tips on how to shop for and prepare food in the most cost-effective and sustainable way. Over 50 per cent of Irish people throw away food regularly – mainly fruit and vegetables, bread, condiments, dairy products and meal leftovers. Make a list of what you throw out next week and you might change your ways. See stopfoodwaste.ie for tips.
