The first Ooooby (Out of our Own Back Yard) stall was set up at a farmers’ market in Auckland, New Zealand, selling only fruit and vegetables grown in local neighbourhood gardens.
The big idea was to give backyard growers an outlet for their excess produce and consumers the option to buy high-quality produce at reasonable prices. Ooooby has now arrived in Ireland courtesy of Suzie and Mike Kahn, who run Carraig Dúlra organic farm in Wicklow. They have opened a non-profit Ooooby store at Glenealy Landscape Centre that allows backyard growers to sell their own production (however small) on Saturdays from 11am to 2pm. The store is also open from 9am to 5pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, selling gardening and food-growing supplies, local food and craft, and discounted wholefoods and fairtrade. www.dulra.org/ooooby
