Sven-Goran Eriksson plans to invoke the FIFA five-day ruling for future international friendlies to prevent a repeat of this week's fiasco when Paul Scholes was pulled out of the England squad and then played for Manchester United.
United boss Alex Ferguson played Scholes against Middlesbrough on Tuesday, even though he had withdrawn the player from the England squad for tomorrow's friendly against Portugal citing an ankle injury.
While stressing that he understood why clubs were reluctant to release players for friendlies when they were not 100 per cent fit, Eriksson nevertheless intends to make sure what happened this week does not happen again.
England's next friendly is against France in February and Eriksson is clearly intent on invoking FIFA's five-day ruling.
"Tomorrow, I'll talk to Adam Crozier [FA chief executive] about it and we will probably change it for the future," Eriksson told Sky Sports News.
"We will use the power we can use and get them to report.
"It's a FIFA ruling and I don't think they can refuse to release the players. It's impossible. If you'd read the papers these last few days you'd get the sensation that someone is cheating but I don't think that's the case.
"To avoid any confusion in the future it would be better if everyone reports for duty and then let another doctor (the England doctor as well as a club doctor) see the players and assess them to decide if they are fit to play."
Asked why he thought Scholes was not fit enough for England but fit enough to play for Manchester United, Eriksson replied: "I don't think he was fit...that was the explanation of Ferguson.
"But they were lacking players and they needed to win that game. Sometimes you take risks for the three points."
