Ethiopian students hijacked a military aircraft carrying at least 50 people today and flew to Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, Ethiopian government sources and Sudanese media said.
Ethiopian sources said the aircraft was carrying civilian trainee pilots who are suspected of hijacking the Antonov transport, which was flying from the northern Ethiopian town of Bahar Dar to the capital, Addis Ababa.
Correspondent Mr Ibrahim Moussa of the official Sudan News Agency told reporters: "The students are demanding to meet the British ambassador and the US ambassador, although there is no US ambassador here. They have also demanded some drinking water," he said.
Ethiopian government sources said the trainee pilots had recently failed to qualify and were being returned to the capital because their studies had been ended.
Gulf Arab news agencies said Sudanese officials had formed a team to negotiate with the hijackers.
