The European Commission welcomed today's acquittal of European Central Bank heir apparent and Bank of France Governor Mr Jean-Claude Trichet in a banking scandal trial.
"I was very pleased to hear that Trichet was aquitted," European Commission President Mr Romano Prodi told a press conference.
"This obviously makes the question of succession must easier with regards to who is at the helm of the European Central Bank. So this is a piece of good news."
European Monetary Affairs Commissioner Mr Pedro Solbes also welcomed the verdict. "It is good news for one of our central bank governors," according to a statement read out to Reuters by a spokesman.
