Moscow - A European Union delegation arrived in Moscow yesterday at the start of a world tour to discuss the fate of the Kyoto climate treaty now that Washington has pulled out of the agreement.
An official at the EU office in Moscow said the delegation, headed by the Swedish Environment Minister, Mr Kjell Larsson, would meet Russian Trade and Economic Development Ministry officials and a meteorology institute representative before flying on to Tehran.
The delegates will also visit China and Japan. They plan to consult officials in countries at different stages of economic development that have different interests in the climate treaty. The new US administration of President Bush withdrew last month from the treaty, which aims to place limits on carbon dioxide emissions to prevent global warming.
