Brussels - The European Commission yesterday warned EU governments they could be stripped of EU funds unless they ensured environmental laws were respected.

The Commission said it could suspend payments of Structural Fund money to any state whose spending plans failed to follow EU legislation designed to protect wildlife habitats and birds. At stake is around €30 billion a year in regional development aid over the next seven years.
