Dr Jack Kevorkian has been charged in Detroit with first-degree murder following the TV screening of a video showing him injecting a terminally ill man with lethal poisons, Joe Carroll reports. The man, Mr Thomas Youk, had asked the doctor to inject him as he was unable to do so himself.

Dr Kevorkian, who claims to have helped over 100 people to commit suicide, challenged the authorities to charge him with a crime so that the US is forced to debate the issue of euthanasia. He has already been acquitted three times in Michigan on charges of assisting a suicide. The law has since been strengthened.
