Former Attorney-General Mr Dermot Gleeson will succeed Mr Lochlann Quinn as the chairman of Allied Irish Banks at the beginning of 2004.
Mr Quinn will remain as chairman of the company until the end of next year. Mr Gleeson has been appointed deputy chairman with immediate effect. He has also been made a senior non-executive director.
Mr Quinn's three-year term as chairman is due to expire at the end of the year but he has agreed to stay on in the post for another year.
