A former Christian Brother has been jailed for one year by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for indecently assaulting a 15year-old boy in a Galway institution 20 years ago.

Paul Farrell (53), of Kinvara Road, Dublin, was convicted by a jury on two counts of indecent assault between November 7th, 1980, and March 31st, 1982, when he worked as deputy director of St Joseph's in Salthill. The jury took just over three hours to reach its majority verdict after a trial in June.

Judge Patrick McCartan granted Farrell continuing bail for a week to allow Mr Felix McEnroy SC, defending, to lodge an appeal with the Court of Criminal Appeal.

Judge McCartan said he was not resiling from the jury's verdict, in which he had the fullest confidence, or from his sentence in granting Farrell bail.
