A former Co Clare doctor appeared in court yesterday charged with receiving €35,436 through falsely pretending to three cancer patients that they would be cured by "photodynamic therapy".
At Killaloe District Court yesterday, an additional 26 charges were brought against Paschal Carmody (60) of Ballycuggaran, Killaloe, Co Clare, under the Larceny Act and the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act.
Mr Carmody first appeared at Limerick District Court last month where 18 charges were brought against him arising out of allegations that he treated cancer patients in return for payments ranging from €100 to €20,000.
Those charges related to offences of larceny, deception and getting money by false pretences in respect of three alleged injured parties on various dates between January 2001 and December 2002.
Last month, Mr Carmody secured bail and at Killaloe District Court yesterday, Det Sgt Oliver Nevin told the court that he arrested Mr Carmody in Ballina, Co Tipperary, yesterday morning in relation to the new charges.
Det Sgt Nevin told the court that after each charge, Mr Carmody had "nothing to say".
The new charges that Mr Carmody is facing accuse him of stealing a total of €35,436 from three different parties between January and September 2002.
Mr Carmody is also accused of securing the €35,436 by falsely pretending that the cancer that three individuals were suffering from would be cured by photodynamic therapy at the East Clinic, Killaloe, between the same dates.
In the three cases, Mr Carmody is charged with stealing €16,005 from one man, €10,036 from a couple and €9,395 from one woman all on dates between January and September 2002.
Mr Carmody was in court yesterday and Det Sgt Nevin said: "It has been a fairly sizeable investigation and it will be a fairly sizeable book of evidence and there is a lot of evidence to be put together.
Judge Joseph Mangan extended time for the serving of the book of evidence "due to the complexity and size of the investigation".
Judge Mangan remanded Mr Carmody on continuing bail to appear before Tulla District Court on March 6th.
The court was told that there was no objection to Mr Carmody being on bail on the same terms that currently apply: that he surrender his passport and sign on twice weekly at Killaloe Garda station.
He has also been ordered not to interfere with, or have any contact with, the alleged injured parties in the case or their relatives.
