A former IRA prisoner is to fight Sinn Féin in the Assembly election in Northern Ireland following its historic decision to get involved in policing.

Gerry McGeough, who was jailed in the United States for gun running and is a former Sinn Féin national executive member, confirmed he will bid for a seat in Fermanagh and South Tyrone.

The constituency has a Sinn Féin MP, Michelle Gildernew, and two Assembly members from the party.

Mr McGeough, who will unveil his campaign on Wednesday, said: "I am faced with a position where I will have to raise the standard for Irish republicanism in Fermanagh and South Tyrone.

"Yesterday's vote by the Sinn Féin ardfheis to support the PSNI was not surprising. However, it was a classic textbook case of counter insurgency.

"The British have succeeded in imposing a policy of divide and rule, with a significant section of the republican movement now being recruited into the British crown system and being used to administer and maintain British rule," Mr McGeough said.
