Australian Prime Minister-elect Kevin Rudd unveiled his ministerial team today and included four women and a former rock star to the centre-left cabinet.

Former academic Wayne Swan, Mr Rudd's old school friend, takes the post of treasurer, while lawyer Stephen Smith, a one-time adviser to former prime minister Paul Keating, becomes foreign minister.

Julia Gillard becomes Australia's first woman deputy prime minister and takes on the workplace relations portfolio to deliver on Mr Rudd's promise to scrap unpopular conservative labour laws.

She will also oversee Mr Rudd's schooling reforms as education minister.

Mr Rudd (50) swept to power in Saturday's election on a promise of generational change after more than 11 years of conservative rule under Prime Minister John Howard.

Mr Rudd and his ministers will be officially sworn in next Monday.
