A photographic exhibition challenging negative public perceptions of growing old was opened in Dublin today.
The Positive Images of Ageing and Older People in your Communitywill run until October 7th and is one of over 400 events being staged nationwide to mark Positive Ageing Week, which starts today.
The exhibition features the winning images and some of the entries from the Age Action Positive Ageing Week Photographic Competition held earlier in the year.
It was opened at the Georgian Museum, Lower Fitzwilliam Street, this morning by RTÉ presenter Miriam O'Callaghan.
Robin Webster, Age Action chief executive, said: "If you fear ageing and believe it will be a time of poor health or isolation, then we would urge you to drop in and view these images of ordinary older people continuing to enjoy their lives into their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond.
"The images on show feature older people hill walking, running, playing with their grandchildren and working."
The exhibition is one of over 400 events being staged around Ireland as part of Positive Ageing Week. This year there are also six Positive Ageing Week areas that are running events.
These are Midleton, Co Cork; Athy, Co Kildare; Castlebar, Co Mayo; Galway City; the county of Monaghan; and Ballymun, Co Dublin.
