An independent expert is to be appointed to carry out a review of how the issues leading up to the suspension of breast radiology service at the Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise were handled.

Following a board meeting this evening, the HSE issued a statement saying that the chairman Liam Downey said a sub-committee would be established to decide on the terms of reference and identify the external person to conduct the review.

This subcommittee will be chaired by Mr Downey and will include HSE board members; Professor Anne Scott, Mr Eugene McCague and Professor Michael Murphy.

The HSE said the review will be "initiated immediately and concluded as a matter of urgency."
