A LIMERICK man who was extradited from Britain appeared before a special court sitting last night charged with the murder of a man in the city 3½ years ago.
Jonathan Fitzgerald (20), South Claughaun Road, Garryowen, Limerick, was arrested at Shannon airport on foot of a European bench warrant issued earlier this year.
Mr Fitzgerald is charged with the murder of Noel Crawford at O’Malley Park, Southill, Limerick, on December 18th, 2006.
Another man has already been charged with the murder and is in custody awaiting trial.
Mr Crawford was shot outside his parents’ home as he celebrated his 40th birthday party. Gardaí believe the father of six was not the intended target.
During last evening’s special court sitting, Det Garda Paraig O’Dwyer said he formally charged Mr Fitzgerald at 4.20pm yesterday at Shannon airport. The court heard he made no reply.
Insp Derek Smart asked that he be remanded in custody until June 30th. Solicitor Ted McCarthy was assigned to represent Mr Fitzgerald, who was granted free legal aid after the court heard he was of “no visible means”.
Judge Aeneas McCarthy remanded him in custody until June 30th when he is due to appear before the same court via video link.
Members of Mr Crawford’s family including his mother were in court for the brief hearing.
Mr Fitzgerald was also charged in connection with a number of unrelated theft matters.
