There have been very few buzzards on this stretch of coast during the winter, but on February 19th I saw three swooping and diving at each other. Is this mating behaviour? Michael Burns, Cushendall, Co Antrim

At this time of year it is more than likely mating behaviour, but groups of buzzards can also play in the same manner.

In mid-February I spotted three V-shaped, noisy, low-flying squadrons of geese crossing Merrion Square park. Were they Brent geese heading out? Joseph Fagan, Castleknock, Dublin 15

Could have been. The old books say that a prolonged east wind (which we had in mid-February) will drive them away from the east coast. They may have been moving to a more sheltered location. Their normal time of departure is April.

A male blackcap arrived in my garden a month ago. He has been chasing away all other birds. Is this natural behaviour? Bridget Flanigan

Male blackcaps that are establishing a breeding territory can be very aggressive, but they sing beautifully.
