Galway-based councillor Michael Fahy has been discharged from hospital, it was reported this evening.

Fahy (56), was admitted to hospital last week on the day before he was due to begin a 12-month jail sentence for the misappropriation of council funds. It is understood he was discharged from hospital this afternoon.

He had a heart operation at University College Hospital Galway last week after he presented with chest pains.

The former Fianna Fáil councillor was also fined €75,000 when he was convicted last month.

He was found guilty of seven counts of fraud and attempted theft arising from the erection of more than a mile of fencing on his farmland by a private contractor hired by Galway County Council.

The Ardrahan-based farmer is the longest serving member of Galway County Council. He has been elected as a councillor at every local election since his first in 1979.

His 96-year-old mother Mae, with whom he lives, remains in Merlin Park Hospital awaiting a bed at a nursing home.
