Nick Faldo's run of competing in 65 consecutive majors has come to an end after he pulled out of next month's U.S. PGA championship to stay at home with his wife and new-born daughter, his agents confirmed today.
Faldo, who already has three other children, will be ending a run at the majors dating back to 1987. Only Jack Nicklaus has a better record.
The 46-year-old has decided to remain with wife Valerie and new daughter Emma Scarlett who was born on Monday.
"Having taken part in 65 consecutive majors this was obviously a tough decision to make, bringing with it mixed emotions," Faldo said.
"This is an incredibly special time in my life becoming a dad again at 46 and I promised Valerie that I would be around to support her and our new daughter."
Faldo has six major titles to his credit - three British Opens and three U.S. Masters.
In the British Open final round 10 days ago he stormed up the leaderboard with a closing 70 to finish only four shots behind the shock winner, Ben Curtis of the U.S.
The 85th U.S. PGA championship runs from August 14th-17th at the Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York state.
Defending champion Rich Beem's wife is due to give birth on August 16th.
