The family of a woman who was killed in the Wellington Quay bus crash in February last year has been awarded €750,000 in damages.

The action against Dublin Bus was taken at the High Court by Liam Gilton, son of Mrs Kathleen Gilton (69) from Maynooth in Co Kildare.

Mrs Gilton, who is survived by her husband, three daughters and a son, was killed when the bus mounted the pavement at a bus stop on Wellington Quay.

Her daughter Nuala, who has Down's Syndrome, was seriously injured and spent four months in hospital.

The court heard Mrs Gilton was "the kingpin and mainstay" of the family. She had been looking after her 84-year-old husband and their two significantly disabled daughters.

Mr Justice Vivian Lavan said the deceased woman was a truly remarkable lady who had had a remarkable life. The family must have wonderful memories of her, he said.
