Brussels - Belgian farmers clashed with police yesterday during an angry demonstration for more government compensation for the mass slaughter of farm animals and poultry following a dioxin food scare.
Three police officers were slightly injured and some 10 demonstrators detained in the scuffles.
Police said some 3,400 people marched to express anger at the handling of the crisis by the outgoing government of the Prime Minister, Mr Jean-Luc Dehaene. Unions organising the demonstration put the figure at between 5,000 and 6,000.
