One of Ireland's largest country estates, the Farnham estate, has been sold to Mr Roy McCabe for slightly over £5 million (€6.35m).

Mr McCabe, a pharmacist, is originally from Cavan.

The estate has been owned by the same family since 1664.

It was offered for sale on the international market following the death of Lord Farnham, Barry Owen Somerset Maxwell. His widow and daughters now spend most of their time in Britain.

The estate has over 1,200 acres beside Cavan town.

The sale, which was handled by Hamilton Osborne King, includes an early-18th-century house, Farnham House.

There are more than 600 acres of parkland and rolling pasture, 500 acres of woodlands and more than 100 acres of lakes.

The estate includes the 100 acre-plus Farnham Lake, in addition to two other large lakes which form part of the great network of loughs and islands stretching southwards from Upper Lough Erne.

The house has four main reception rooms, 10 bedrooms, two dressing rooms and six bathrooms.

HOK Country and Knight Frank in London were joint agents for the sale.

They confirmed that the estate had been sold to an Irish businessman for his own use.
