A father and daughter were among four people killed in road traffic accidents at the weekend, writes Christine Newman.

On Saturday, a car left the road and went into the canal at Ballycommon, Daingean, Co Offaly at 2 p.m. resulting in the deaths of the two people in the vehicle: Mr Christy Daly (71), who was the driver, and his daughter Ms Lorraine Daly (22).

Mr Daly is survived by his wife and three sons.

Gardaí at Tullamore are investigating the cause of the accident. A spokesman said the car may have collided with or swerved to avoid something which caused it to veer off the road and into the canal.

Two motorcyclists died in separate accidents. On Saturday at 8 p.m. a car and a motorcycle were in collision at Derrynavahagh, Lisdoonvarna, Co Clare. Mr Neill Considine (25) of Lisdoonvarna, was fatally injured in the accident.

A man died in Co Wexford after his motorcycle left the road and hit a ditch on Saturday night. The accident happened at 10.30 p.m. at Coolaught, Clonroche, Wexford. The man was named yesterday as Mr Anthony O'Leary snr (49), from Clonroche, Enniscorthy.
